Emergencies don't exclude those with disabilities, and now there is a way for those people in Linn County to call 911 for help.

Cedar Rapids Public Safety communications director Greg Buelow tells KWWL that making the regular voice call to 911 is still the ideal method. But, in the case of people with medical conditions who cannot speak or hear, or when being discrete is necessary for safety, such as a home invasion or domestic disturbance, text-to-911 is now available.

Linn County joins other counties in Eastern Iowa who have previously implemented this service, including Dubuque and Black Hawk.
