A movie filmed in eastern Iowa that's already won a film festival award will be shown in Iowa City soon.

The movie East of Middle West was written by Mokotsi Rokundo. He was born in Swaziland but moved to Iowa when he was just 10-years-old. When writing the screenplay for the movie, Rokundo drew heavily on the years he spent in Iowa, growing up. As he says on the movie's website, "Write who you are. Write what you observe. Write characters who are believable."

East of Middle West "follows a teenage runaway and a widowed father who each fight to take matters into their own hands to redeem their dark past. The slow burning crime drama takes place in a small midwestern town where everyone has a dark secret that simmers below the surface."

The independent movie was filmed in a variety of Iowa locations including Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Solon, and Tiffin. The photo below is from when some scenes were being done near Solon.

One of the movie's lead actors, Carson MacCormac, even got to take the field with the Clear Creek-Amana Clippers football team during filming in Tiffin.

It's taken several years for East of Middle West to go from inception to where it is today, thanks in no small part to the pandemic. However, it's been a part of several film festivals and won the Audience Festival Award at the Sarasota Film Festival.
