Today is a big day for Major League Baseball fans, the start of the 2022 campaign. Hearts will be broken, dreams will be made... as a Twins fan, I go in with low expectations, but high hopes.

Whether you love baseball or you don't, chances are at some time in your life you've at least "had a catch".  So, what's all this have to do with one super dumb law still on the books here in eastern Iowa? I'm getting to it, I promise.

You see, this really dumb law has to deal with... softball, America's favorite beer-related pastime.

This particularly silly Iowa law remains on the books in Mount Vernon. The law is quite picky when it comes not to how Iowans play softball, but when they play.

I kid you not, code 47.06 states:

The lights at the Mount Vernon softball diamond shall be used only for organized games and tournaments unless permission is obtained from the Parks and Recreation Director. In no event shall the lights at the ballpark be on after 10:30 p.m. on any night.

But... what if your game starts late? What if the teams playing before you go long? This is ridiculous, makes me want to kick sand on the ump and throw first base into right-center field!

Perhaps this law was created by people who enjoy softball, but want to make it home in time to get some sleep before work the next day? Or, perhaps they want to have enough time to swing by Hy-Vee before they close.

OR, maybe they just hate fun. Look guys, it's 10:31, yerrrrr out!

You HAVE to See This Nebraska Ghost Town

Despite being a ghost town the buildings are in excellent shape!
