Ah, Target. It's the place where people go to pick up groceries, cute home items, and things they don't need. Target has so much great stuff, it's easy to spend hours in there going through the isles. Residents in downtown Iowa City are going to be doing just that as a Target store could be coming to the area!

The Gazette reports that the department store is in "discussion to open a small-format store on East Washington Street in downtown Iowa City".  What's a small-format store, you ask? These are smaller versions of the store that are about "one-third the size of a standard Target and could be anywhere from 15,000 to 40,000 square feet." These small-format stores are becoming more common too, as the report states that "Target opened 10 small-format stores, also known as urban Targets, on or near college campuses in 2018, and have nearly 100 such stores across the country as of June 2019." This location would focus on "home goods, food, and beverage," according to KCRG. A Target near the University of Iowa campus would be pretty convenient. Neumann Monson Architects are taking on the project, check out what it would look like:

Iowa City Target

When it comes to location, Target is currently in negotiations to lease a space at 115 E. Washington St. that is about 24,000 square feet. Currently, the closest Target location for Iowa City residents is at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, so this new space would be very convenient.

Word is that a lease is set to be signed in a few weeks, so keep your fingers crossed. There is no word yet on when the store would open, but when it does... there goes our paychecks.
