The price of stamps actually dropped last year. Nine months later, they're set to go up again.

April 10, 2016, the price of a first-class stamp went from 49 cents to 47 cents. It was the first price drop since 1919. Nine months and twelve days later (January 22, 2017) we're set to return to 49 cents for a first-class stamp. Some other prices will stay the same, while others will also increase.

Here's a breakdown of prices now, and what they'll be January 22:

Now                January 22, 2017

  • First-Class Mail (1 ounce)                      $.47                        $.49
  • Metered Mail First-Class Mail                 $.465                      $.46
  • Additional Ounces  (same)                     $.21                        $.21
  • First-Class Mail Flat/Large Envelope     $.94                        $.98
  • Postcard (same)                                     $.34                        $.34

Though the price of a first-class stamp will increase, Stamps.com says they will be selling them for $.46, lower than the actual price now.

On February 20, 2017, the postal service will release a new stamp celebrating the late president John F. Kennedy.
