Daughter of Iowa Great Earns Basketball Scholarship as 8th Grader

Iowa football has had a plethora of great linebackers come through its program. Anthony Hitchens, Christian Kirksey, Josey Jewell, Patt Angerer, AJ Edds, James Morris, Fred Barr, and the list goes on and on.

One of the linebackers you have to mention in Hawkeye football lore is Chad Greenway. The Second-Team All-American and First-Team Big Ten LB was a monster in the middle of Kirk Ferentz's defense. As a junior, Greenway racked up 113 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, three interceptions, and three sacks. Over his senior season, the Mount Vernon native posted 156 tackles, ten for a loss. He also broke up eight passes, recorded two sacks, and grabbed one interception.

The athletic apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

As she announced via Twitter on Tuesday, Chad's daughter Maddyn Greenway was offered a scholarship by the Iowa women's basketball program.

The thing that's surprising about Maddyn is that though you wouldn't be able to tell by her game, she hasn't even entered high school yet.

She started playing varsity basketball in 7th grade, and it was all gas no breaks from the get-go. She's already scored 1,000 points for her career and she did it in 46 games. That's scoring 21.7 points per contest before she's even obtained her driver's license.

She also led her team, Providence Academy, to a state championship this spring. She tallied 15 points in that game and sealed the deal with a late-game free throw.

This is what she told Fox9 in Minnesota about her family tie:

Last year, there was a lot of ‘oh, that’s (Chad’s) daughter.' It’s going to happen, people will always say that because he was really good, but I’ll just continue to do what I’m doing to make a name for myself.

So far, she's got offers from Iowa, Creighton, and Minnesota.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be behind the scenes with the Iowa Hawkeyes? When you're part of the Ladies Football academy you get the full experience of what it's like to be on the field in Kinnick Stadium with Kirk Ferentz, coaches and the Iowa Hawkeye football players.

Take a look inside the locker rooms and other places regular people can't normally see.

Here's a bit of history.

The Ladies Football Academy has been a University of Iowa football tradition for over a decade. This year's event was the last; held on June 11, 2022. 665 women participated in the day-long event raising funds for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Over $500,000 was raised this year alone.

Since the tradition began in 2010 (the academy was canceled two years during the pandemic) the program has raised nearly $3 million.

The ladies must raise at least $500 to participate in the football camp, but in exchange, they can meet the Iowa Hawkeye football players, coaches, and trainers, get autographs, tour the football facilities and run drills with the players. It's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list experience.
