Tis the time of the year where NFL teams with new head coaches are busy assembling their staffs. Over the last couple weeks, I've written about a Pewaukee, WI native assuming control of the Las Vegas Raiders, and an Iowa City native/University of Iowa grad becoming the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears.

Now, the Bears will look to add another Iowa boy to the mix. However, unlike Declan Doyle, who, at 28-years-old, is the youngest coordinator in the entire NFL, this coach is a grizzled veteran. At 64-years-old, he has been a professional coach since the mid-1980s, and has deep dives to both the state of Iowa and Illinois alike.

His name is Dan Roushar, and he last served as the offensive line coach for the Tulane Green Wave in 2023 and 2024. It's been reported by multiple credible NFL sources that Roushar is nearing an agreement to become the offensive line coach of the Chicago Bears under first-year head coach Ben Johnson.

Roushar is from Clinton, IA, where he grew up and attended Clinton High School. He went on to attend Northern Illinois University, a place to which he'd later return. In 1997, he became the team's offensive line coach, and parlayed that into roles as both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1998 to 2002.

Roushar has worked for multiple different colleges and NFL teams over his multi-decade run as a coach. Most notably, he worked with the New Orleans Saints from 2013 - 2022, under head coach Sean Payton, handling everything from coaching running backs to coaching up their offensive lines.

Roushar becomes the latest Bears hire with ties to New Orleans and Payton. The aforementioned Declan Doyle was Payton's protégé both with the Saints and last year with the Denver Broncos. The Saints connections make some sense given Ben Johnson's previous boss, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, also worked in New Orleans.

Following Johnson's hiring, Bears fans such as myself were hawking over the team in anticipation of who would not only handle offensive and defensive coordinating duties, but who would also take the reigns in developing Chicago's porous offensive line.

While Chicago's offensive line was ranked 17th by Pro Football Network, Bears fans know it looked and felt worse. Part of that was due to rookie quarterback Caleb Williams holding onto the ball for too long. However, there were more than a handful of plays that were left on the whiteboard due to the team's pass-blocking completely falling apart in milliseconds after the ball was snapped.

Dan Roushar will surely have his work cut out for him. All eyes will be on that unit from the first game. That said, it is awesome that yet another Iowa native has found his spot on a Bears coaching staff that, dare I say, looks promising from the top-down.
