Cedar Rapids JCPenney Location Opens Today
JCPenney is re-opening stores and doing it at a faster pace than once thought possible. The Gazette reports that the Texas-based department store chain which filed for bankruptcy earlier this month has opened 150 more stores for a total of over 300 locations nationwide. It says it plans on having 500 of its 846 stores open by next Wednesday.
KCRG reports the Cedar Rapids location, at Westdale, is opening today with reduced hours. The store will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What about other JCPenney locations in Iowa? The Gazette reports that a call to their corporate offices to inquire about store locations in Coralville, and elsewhere in Iowa was not returned.
The company reportedly hasn't decided which stores in plans on closing as part of its bankruptcy reorganization. The Gazette reports that the preliminary plan called for more than 200 stores to close permanently. All of the stores have been closed since mid-March which sent the company, which had been trying to refinance some of its old debt, into bankruptcy court.
JCPenney and many other retailers began slowly re-opening store locations in early May. Most stores started by offering curbside pickup and online purchases. The company is requiring all employees to wear protective gear and is providing them with masks and gloves. They have also reportedly added plexiglass shields to check out areas and contactless checkout from customer's phones.
JCPenney has Iowa locations in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Dubuque, West Des Moines, Davenport, Marshalltown, Ames, Carroll, Spencer, Council Bluffs, and Sioux City.
