[UPDATE SATURDAY, APRIL 20 10 AM] The Broken Spoke restaurant, which took on smoke damage Thursday during a fire next door at Riley's Cafe, itself had fire damage Friday night.

According to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, firefighters were called by an alarm to Riley's Cafe on Sylvia Avenue, which had caught fire Thursday afternoon. When they arrived, there was "a light haze inside Riley's Cafe." They extinguished hot spots they found in the ceiling of the building and hot embers and burning insulation above both Riley's Cafe and The Broken Spoke, which had reopened just hours earlier.

Like the Thursday fire, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department determined Friday's fire was unintentional.

[ORIGINAL STORY] A popular Cedar Rapids restaurant will likely be closed for several months following a Thursday fire.

Riley's Cafe, which has four Cedar Rapids locations, was hit by a fire at the restaurant just off Center Point Road NE at 2010 Sylvia Lane NE.

According to CBS 2, the fire started right around noon Thursday, April 18. When fire crews arrived, the building had heavy smoke inside and fire had to be extinguished in the ceiling and along a wall in the kitchen area of the restaurant. Thankfully, no one was injured in the unintentional fire.

This isn't the first time a Riley's Cafe has been closed by a fire. The Riley's at 836 1st Ave NE was shut down for more than a year after a fire in September of 2016 that started in the ceiling and attic area near the kitchen. It reopened in October of 2017.

The Broken Spoke, which is adjacent to Riley's Cafe on Sylvia Lane, will also be closed for several days as the building is allowed to air out. The interior of that restaurant suffered no damage.
