Cedar Rapids Neighborhood Evacuated After Stray Bullet Hits Gas Line
Cedar Rapids cops were busy again investigating a complaint of shots fired on the Southwest side Saturday night around 11:00 p.m. when they discovered something that could have been even more devastating - a gas leak.
KCRG reported that police discovered a stray bullet that was fired struck a gas meter, causing a gas leak, around 11 p.m. Saturday.
Police say it happened near 3rd Avenue and 11th Street Southwest. Cops got calls from several people living in the area that alerted them to the scene.
When officers arrived and smelled gas, they quickly evacuated the neighborhood.
It didn't take long for investigators to discover a bullet had hit a gas meter and caused a leak. A work crew from MidAmerican Energy responded and safely repaired the leak.
Police say no arrests have been made, and asks that anyone with information about the shooting to contact them. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
