Cedar Rapids Jefferson high school remains under lockdown. Cedar Rapids police say the school has been on lockdown since just after 8 a.m.

In a message to parents of students at the school, Cedar Rapids school district officials say that "the Cedar Rapids police department is investigating an emergency medical situation involving one student. Students are being held in place until more information is gathered."

A press release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department states:

At 7:56 a.m. this morning Cedar Rapids police officers were called to a 15-year old male found outside behind the auditorium at Jefferson High School, 1243 20th Street SW, who had sustained a gunshot wound.

Preliminarily, the Police Department does not believe that anyone other than the victim was involved, however, the incident is under investigation.  The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The school is on lockdown as a precaution.  We do not believe there is any active threat to the public including students and staff at Jefferson.
