It's rough to think about people still being displaced from their homes while repair work is ongoing from the August 10, 2020 derecho, but an extension to an ordinance set last fall has been announced by the city of Cedar Rapids. It allows residents to dwell in recreational vehicles (RV) in town until November 15, 2021.

Recreational vehicles include travel trailers, motor homes, and campers, according to this proclamation, according to a City of Cedar Rapids press release.

Extensions may be granted beyond November 15 on a case-by-case basis. While not intended to serve as permanent living quarters, permission has been extended as the community continues its ongoing rebuilding and repair efforts.

Here is a summary of the guidelines that will apply:

  • You're required to apply for a zoning clearance permit, and these can be accessed via this site.
  • You can e-mail the completed application to zoning@cedar-rapids.org.
  • Have you been issued a building permit to reconstruct or restore a permanent dwelling structure? You'll need one, and a copy of the building permit must be included with the zoning clearance permit application.
  •  No contractors or anyone outside the main occupant and immediate family will be allowed to reside in the temporary housing unit.
  • RVs should not be placed on the existing slab for the primary dwelling; the City must approve the location.

You must be able to connect the RV to electric, sewer, and water services, have access to a vehicle that can tow the recreational vehicle if necessary, and only one temporary RV unit is allowed per lot. Iowa's News Now also has more information.

By now, some people may be making plans to pack up the RV (or buy one) for a spring or summer camping trip. We can help, giving you a chance to Win Cash by listening for code words across the workday. Listen for chances to win $1,000 or up to $10,000 with the "Workday Payday".
