19-Year-Old Killed in Highway 13 Crash in Linn County
UPDATE 3/31 11:15 a.m.: Names of victims released. The woman killed in the incident was Justine Michele Bonner of Cedar Rapids. The 18-year-old that was not injured n the crash was Rodney Charles Dennis Jr. of Cedar Rapids.
[ORIGINAL STORY] A mid-afternoon crash on Highway 13, near Bertram, has claimed the life of a young woman.
The Linn County Sheriff's Office and Rescue, West Bertram Fire Department, Cedar Rapids Police, and Area Ambulance Service all responded to an accident at 1329 Highway 13, at 2:38 p.m. Thursday afternoon. According to a press release from the Linn County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle had been traveling north on Highway 13 when the female driver lost control, crossed the median, and the vehicle rolled. It ended up on its top on the traveled portion of the southbound lanes.
There were two people in the vehicle. The 19-year-old female driver, and an 18-year-old male passenger. The man wasn't hurt, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the single-vehicle crash.
The southbound lanes of Highway 13 were closed south of Mt. Vernon Road after the accident. The roadway has since reopened fully.
The name of the victim hasn't been released, pending notification of relatives. The accident continues to be investigated.
