One person was killed while another person was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for their injuries after a multi-vehicle collision closed down Interstate 80 for several hours on Thursday night.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the collision happened at around 3:30 p.m. at mile marker 242.5 on Interstate 80. The accident involved a total of seven passenger vehicles and four semi tractor-trailers. Officials blame the wreck on poor driving conditions due to icy conditions caused by the snow that had been falling for several hours. Some white-out conditions had also been reported in the area.

The driver of a 2004 Hynduai Santa Fe was killed in the accident. The name of the victim is not being released. The driver or passenger of a 2017 Ford Transit Connect cargo van was injured and sent to the University of Iowa Hospitals for treatment. Seatbelts were worn in both vehicles.

A portion of Interstate 80 was closed for hours after the wreck. It has since re-opened to traffic.
