Interstate travelers and police in Cedar Rapids will soon have a clearer warning if a motorist is driving the wrong way.

The number of fatalities resulting from wrong-way drivers averages over 300 per year, and the hope is that a new step being taken will reduce that number significantly

The Iowa Department of Transportation has announced that a message reading "WARNING: WRONG WAY DRIVER REPORTED" will be displayed on electronic road signs within the city limits of Cedar Rapids.

They will indicate when the Joint Communications Center has received a report of someone driving the wrong way on local interstates.

If you see one of these alerts, Cedar Rapids Police tell us to slow down and proceed with extreme caution, pulling off the road whenever possible.
