Woman Kidnapped in Pennsylvania Found Safe in Iowa

26-year-old Amber Garrison of Smyrna, New York, who says she was kidnapped from a Pennsylvania truck stop in mid-July, is safe after she called 911 from an Iowa convenience store over the weekend.

Garrison called 911 from the cab of the semi several times Saturday morning from a Casey's store in Stuart, Iowa, about 40 miles west of Des Moines. The first call was made at approximately 9:50 a.m., but because Garrison didn't speak directly to a dispatcher to provide an exact location, it was nearly three hours later before officers were able to locate her. Garrison had multiple injuries and was taken to the Adair County Hospital for treatment.

According to a release from the Stuart Police Department, Garrison told authorities the man assaulted her several times and "forced her to remain with the driver of the truck as he traveled through multiple states in his semi." She had been reported missing to New York State Police in early August.

Following a search warrant of the semi, 32-year-old James S. Smith of Mexico, New York was arrested. He's been charged with 1st Degree Kidnapping, 1st Degree Harassment, Domestic Assault with a Weapon, and Obstruction of Emergency Communication. He is being held on over $1 million bond in the Adair County Jail in Greenfield, Iowa and could face additional charges.
