Sad news as a boy from Williamsburg passed away after his battle with a rare brain tumor.
According to KCRG, Tate Schaefer known for the Tater Tough Movement has passed away. Tate was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPD) back in December of 2018. Since then his family started the "Tater Tough" movement to support Tate. One of his supporters was even an NFL player.
In December of 2019, we told you that NFL players across the country were participating in the "My Cause My Cleets" campaign highlighting hundreds of different charities. Offensive lineman for the Los Angeles Rams, former Iowa Hawkeye, and Williamsburg native Austin Blythe chose to represent 'TaterTough.'
On Monday, March 29 at 2:27 a.m. after an over two year battle, Tate Shaefer finished is time here on Earth. Tate's family posted a heartfelt message on the Tater Tough Facebook page:
On Monday, March 29, 2021 at 2:27 am Tate finished his course here on earth. He was surrounded by Teagan, Brad, and Darcy and we know that at his final breath he was ushered into Heaven’s gates by his Grandma Angel and so many others who have watched over him in his years here with us. He is shooting hoops, practicing his crossovers, hitting dingers, throwing heat off the mound and hitting bomb drives on the golf course. All pain free." -Darcy Schaefer
Childhood cancer is something that no family should have to go through. In KHAK's 23 years doing the Children's Miracle Network Radiothon at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital we've seen our share of children and their families battling their own diagnoses. It's so hard to see stories end this way. But, we're thankful that we have such an amazing hospital providing first-class care for these kids and their families.
Seeing stories like this, and such an incredible boy whose life was cut short, makes you appreciate each day and the time you have on this planet. Our hearts go out to Tate's family.
