Waterloo Cop in Head-On Crash with Drunk
Following a tragic highway accident just days ago on I-380, another scary moment for area law enforcement occurred this week.
Yesterday morning around 4:30 a.m. Waterloo Police received a report from Grundy County about a vehicle traveling toward Waterloo in the wrong lane on Highway 20.
Waterloo police officer Mark Nissen responded, and saw a vehicle approaching him in the wrong lane on Highway 20. Officer Nissen had his lights and siren on. He stopped on Highway 20 and tried to avoid the collision, but the oncoming vehicle slammed into him head-on.
Remarkably Officer Nissen wasn't seriously injured or killed. He was treated at the hospital and is home recovering from his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was Erick Anderson, 27 from Missouri.
Anderson was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail after the crash, and has been charged with an OWI, his 2nd offense, along with no proof of insurance, failure to maintain control, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
