Voters in the Alburnett Community School District voted down an $11.6 million general bond, declining to raise the district's property taxes to help pay for projects within the school district.

According to unofficial results from the Linn County Auditors office, the bond failed with 55% of the public voting no. It needed a 60% approval to pass. The bond would have paid for updates to elementary and secondary schools, agricultural and industrial tech spaces, a new auditorium, and 10 new classrooms. Superintendent Dani Trimble said that the plan would have addressed needs for students at every age level and across multiple platforms.

If approved, property taxes in the Alburnett District would have gone up to $1.89 per $1,000 of a home's taxed value. The district said that the average home valued at $100,000 would pay around $117 more a year in taxes.

Due to Iowa law, the bond issue can not go before voters again for at least six months.
