University of Iowa Student Found Dead During Extreme Weather
A University of Iowa student was found dead on the university's campus early this morning.
According to CBS2 the University of Iowa Police discovered Gerald Belz unresponsive around 2:48 Wednesday morning behind Halsey Hall. Belz was then transported to the hospital where he later died. The CBS 2 report also states that Belz was an 18-year-old in his first year as a pre-medicine major and he was a native of Cedar Rapids.
Officials believe the cause of death is weather-related, as wind chills around that time of the morning would have been around -51 degrees. Belz's father Michael reached out to CBS2/FOX 28 to say, "Based on comments the family received from two doctors and the police captain this morning, they told us multiple times that zero alcohol was found in his system." Officials do not suspect foul play at this time, but an investigation is ongoing. Students affected by Belz' death are encouraged to seek out counseling services.
Our thoughts are with the Belz family.
