Construction Update: Tower Terrace Road Has Been Reopened
A huge construction project has taken another step toward completion.
Both the City of Hiawatha and the City of Cedar Rapids announced via press releases Monday morning that a large section of Tower Terrace Road has reopened to traffic.
Tower Terrace Road is now open to both eastbound and westbound traffic from Miller Road to North Center Point Road. It was announced on October 12, that Tower Terrace had opened from North Center Point Road, where a new roundabout was constructed, east to Miller Road.
According to Hiawatha City Engineer Jon Fitch, two lanes of traffic are now open on Tower Terrace Road from Miller Road, all the way to Robins Road. Due to ongoing construction along the route, the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. The press release also notes, "There will be lane shifts on both ends of the project to bring drivers into the eastbound lanes for 2-way traffic. This is required, as the new south interchange bridge is not completed."
Access to Interstate 380 at Tower Terrace Road is not yet available as that work continues. The long-anticipated I-380/Tower Terrace Road interchange is expected to open in the spring of 2023. Depending on the weather, all the work along Tower Terrace Road should be finished next spring or by the early summer.
Additional work along I-380 in Hiawatha is expected to begin sometime in 2024, with the reconstruction of the Boyson Road exit. The project is expected to cost just under $20 million.
