Just as Iowa and the nation were honoring "The Day the Music Died" last weekend, thieves were striking, near the site of where the plane crashed that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper.

The annual Winter Dance Party at Surf that celebrates the legacy of the music legends was held last weekend, and someone in attendance snatched priceless memorabilia representing Richie Valens, including a 4-foot tall "La Bamba" movie poster and photo collages. The theft took place at the Best Western Motor Lodge in Clear Lake, at a luncheon event held in conjunction with the Winter Dance Party.

The Des Moines Register reports police are still investigating the theft, and you can contact the Clear Lake Police Department at 641-357-2186 or at police@cityofclearlake.org with any information.

The safe return of the materials will be welcomed "no questions asked" by the Valens family, according to the Register.
