Influenza killed the first two Iowans during the latest flu season on November 15, 2019. March 24, 2020, the first person in the state died from COVID-19. The overall fatalities from the two viruses are heavily weighted to the new one that has caused a pandemic around the world.

WHO-TV compiled the numbers from the two viruses over the last, nearly six months. Since the first influenza deaths on November 15, 94 more people in Iowa died from that virus. A total of 96 people have passed away from influenza in 170 days.

Unfortunately, if you've been paying attention to the COVID-19 outbreak you know the number of deaths is much higher, in a shorter time frame. Since the first COVID-19 death on March 24, another 187 people in Iowa have died from the virus. That includes four new deaths that were just announced by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), bringing the total to 188. The time frame covers only 41 days.

The IDPH has released its daily data this morning, indicating 534 new cases of COVID-19 in Iowa in the last 24 hours. You can see the full report below.
