This happened on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, which forced the plane to make an emergency landing at Portland International Airport. The blowout resulted in depressurization of the cabin, leading to chaos and panic among passengers.
The Woman Who Met The Teen Onboard
According to Kelly Bartlett, who was sitting three rows in front of the location of the incident, the situation was a terrifying mixture of wind and noise. Remarkably, a shirtless teenager leaped into the seat next to her. The teenager turned out to be the boy who was sitting right next to the door when it blew out.
Upon realizing that the blowout was more than just a window and in fact an entire panel, Bartlett revealed that the teenager's life had been saved by his seatbelt. His shirt was ripped off by the immense suction caused by the sudden decompression of the plane.
Describing the incident, Bartlett said, I can't imagine what it was like to be in his position. Due to the noise, they had to communicate through the Notes app on her phone where she discovered his name was Jack.
What Was Her Interaction With Teenager Jack?
She narrated her interaction with Jack: I wrote, 'Did you get hurt?' He wrote back, 'Arm is a bit scratched. That was unbelievable. My name is Jack, by the way. Thanks for your kindness.'
Despite the shock of the experience, the two posed for selfies together at Jack's suggestion.
"He said, ‘Let's take a selfie,' and as a mom, I was not thinking of it as a selfie moment, but as a 15-year-old, it was his perspective. He had just gone through something unbelievable, was the word he used," Bartlett said.
Fearlessly, Bartlett boarded three additional flights within the next 24 hours, asserting her determination not to develop a phobia of flying.
"I didn't know if getting on another flight was the right thing to do, and I think that actually it was because I didn't want to end up with a lifetime fear of flying," she said.
She will never forget her experience on Alaska Airlines flight 1282.
