All the cancelations the past few weeks have had people feeling like "let's just cancel summer itself". Well, in Marion, that's basically exactly what they've just done because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Every last entertainment event the city had planned from May through July is called off. The firm but bittersweet news certainly cuts back on the confusion, but not on the disappointment.

According to Iowa's News Now, here's the story. The Moonlit Movie Night on May 29: canceled. The famed Marion by Moonlight concert series, Thursdays in June at Marion Square Park: canceled. Marion Community Band Concerts, June 9 and 30: called off. Music Under the Moon, "Messy Art Day", the "Tiny Fair", Picnic on the Prairie, and yes, the town's Fireworks & Fireflies event which was to be the Independence Day celebration on July 3rd have all fizzled out. Also not happening in July will be the Marion Big Band concert series.

Marion mayor Nicolas AbouAssaly made the announcement saying "after careful consideration and consultation with event organizers and sponsors, we have made the collective decision to cancel the free community concerts, events and movie nights originally planned for our outdoor public venues through early-July."

We know why, but it's harsh to see in one fell swoop. The great news is the Marion Midtown Market in Uptown Marion is set to go on as planned on the second Saturdays of June, July and August, as reportedly will Sunrise Yoga at Lowe Park every Saturday from June through August. A "modified" socially-distanced version of the Farmers' Market at Taube Park is expected to resume Saturday, May 16.

They continue to look into alternative options for modified editions of the smaller events like Tiny Fair and Messy Art Day. There also still seems to be hope for the Marion Uptown Getdown concerts and other events in August.

But much of the bummer summer of 2020 continues to unravel in a huge way as Marion looks to protect the safety of its residents, event-goers, employees, and volunteers.
