The University of Iowa men's basketball team played an exhibition game last Friday night against Division II Augustana University.

The Hawks lost, 76-74.

That's not good. But should we be worried?

First, it was an exhibition game. Which means it doesn't count. It won't be a blemish on their record, or come into play with rankings or tournament bids.

It's still bad.

Augustana is a private liberal arts university with an enrollment of about 1,800 students. The Vikings compete in NCAA Division II athletics in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. They're also the preseason #1 in NCAA Division II.

They still have no business beating Iowa.

It might not be the end of the world, though. Back in 2009, Syracuse lost to Division II Le Moyne. Syracuse went on to go 30-5 and win the Big East.

It happens. Teams take games like this for granted. They overlook lesser opponents. They get upset. But it's still not good.

The Hawkeyes open up action for real this Friday night against Gardner-Webb. Let's hope they remember that this game actually counts.
