A school bus vs. SUV crash happened on the first day of class in Linn County this morning. No kids were on board and only minor injuries were reported, according to Linn Co. Sheriff Brian Gardner.

It reportedly happened just after 8 a.m. near Wright Brothers Blvd. and Highway 151, just north of Walford. Traffic was delayed slightly and no other information was reported.

Seat belts and other new safety equipment are supposed to become mandated by Iowa law October 2nd,  and the Iowa Department of Transportation provides school bus safety tips to make for a smooth and safe transition back to class for students, parents, families, and drivers.

They call the school bus "danger zone" 10 feet, in front of, and behind the buses. All should be aware of potential buses in this zone for the safety of kids getting on and off.

Both the bus driver, 41-year-old Shauna Whitaker of Ely and the SUV driver, 72-year-old Sharon Varo of Cedar Rapids, were treated for minor injuries and Whitaker has now been charged with failure to yield.
