A rooster fitted with a knife for an illegal cockfight in the southern part of India has killed its owner, which has now sparked a manhunt for the organizers of the event.

Officers said the rooster had a knife attached to its leg and was waiting to take on an opponent when it cut his owner's groin while trying to escape.

The man died minutes later from loss of blood before he could reach a hospital. He was among 16 organizers of the event when he was stabbed.

Police held the rooster at a local police station before it was sent to a poultry farm.

“We are searching for the other 15 people involved in organising the illegal fight,” Officer B Jeevan said.

The group could face charges of manslaughter and illegal betting and hosting a cockfight.

Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha states in India see cockfights often, even though they are illegal.

Specially bred roosters are thrown into a ring with 3-inch knives tied to their legs, where they fight to the death.
