Cedar Rapids-based Rockwell Collins is going to reduce its workforce next year.

The news came on Friday afternoon as a company spokesman says the reduction will affect 2-3 percent of its 20,000 total employees, 8,700 of whom are based in the Cedar Rapids area, according to the Metro Economic Alliance.

Rockwell Collins says some of the reduction will be achieved through a combination of retirements and not back filling certain positions. Some positions will also be cut.

It's has not yet been released how the deep cuts will be locally. Also undisclosed was any immediate information on how the potential job losses could  impact local workers.

Rockwell Collins contracts out avionic and information technology systems to government agencies and aircraft manufacturers.
