July 7 marks the 182nd day of the year, which means we are pretty much exactly halfway through the year 2022. Iowans can expect 125 new laws that will start effecting them today. Everything from unemployment programs, renewable energy, elder abuse, hunting season, and child care employment programs to name a few.

I am paraphrasing these laws into my own language and I'm trying to just get to the point. If you have any questions regardling a law on this list and want to read it in it's full language, please do your own research. Also, this is not clearly a list of 125 laws, I chose a select few I personally found intersting.

KCRG reports the following;

HF2355 Unemployment Programs - Individuals who receive unemployment will now receive unemployment for 16 weeks. Before today, individuals received unemployment for 26 weeks. Now, if you are out of a job because your work was closed permanently, you will receive unemployment for 26 weeks instead of the previous 39.

SF 2378: Bottle Program - The handling fee a business can earn from the bottle and can redemption program has been raised to 3 cents, as it was previously 1 cent.

HF2497 Casino Moratorium - If you were looking forward to a new casino anytime soon, you're out of luck. There won't be any new casinos, licensed by the state for at least 2 years.

SF 522 Elder Abuse - I'm curious how this hasn't been put into action already but this means elder abuse (anyone 60 and older) will now be a crime in Iowa for the first time. Whether that's in the form of financial exploitation, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, etc.  These can now be charged as serious misdemeanors or felonies.

HF 2198 Child Care Center Employment - If you are 16 or 17 years old, you are now allowed to care for children at a care center, without adult supervision.

Our Quad Cities reports the following;

SF 2334 - This hunting related law outlines shotguns which may be used to hunt turkeys. Calibor .410 shotguns or a 28 gauge shotgun can only shoot shot no smaller than shot size 10.

HF 2209 - This is another hunting law which states

A resident of the state under 16 years of age is not required to have a hunting or fur harvestor license to accompany the minor's parent or guardian or any other competant adult with the consent of the minors parents or guardian, while the parent or guardian or other adult is hunting. - Legis Iowa

This one confused me a little so I went to Iowa DNR and they say "a resident youth under 16 years of age are not required to have a license but must be acompanied by an adult of 18 years of age with a license."

These are just a select few of the new laws that affect Iowa as of today. You can read more of the new laws by clicking any of the links provided or go to Iowa House.
