Mexico Set to Legalize Marijuana, Becoming World’s Largest Market
Last night, lawmakers in Mexico decided to legalize recreational marijuana in a milestone vote for the country.
The vote came through at a staggering 316-to-129 in the Chamber of Deputies, ruling that the country's ban on recreational marijuana was unconstitutional.
Three years ago, the country legalized medicinal cannabis.
When officially legalized, the bill will allow adults to smoke marijuana and grant access to permits to grow a small number of cannabis plants at home.
“Today we are in a historic moment,” said Simey Olvera, a lawmaker with the governing Morena party. “With this, the false belief that cannabis is part of Mexico’s serious public health problems is left behind.”
When it's enacted, the US will be in a weed sandwich between Mexico and Canada, who legalized recreational marijuana in October of 2018.
