The boy's state basketball tournament gets underway in Des Moines this week. Tuesday features a match-up between the Marion Independent School District and Winterset. But after the deadly storms of this weekend, that game now has a much different meaning.

The Marion School District has announced plans to gather supplies and gift cards for the community of Winterset, Iowa. The town was hit hard by a tornado on Saturday, claiming 7 lives within the community. Since the two schools play against each other on Tuesday in boy's basketball, everything gathered in the next two days will be delivered to Winterset following Tuesday's game, according to KCRG.

Here is a list of items that people in Winterset are in need of.

  • Tarps
  • Boxes
  • Plastic storage totes and containers
  • Flashlights
  • bottled water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Gift cards for food, meals, and gas

Donations can be dropped off at any school building in the Marion Independent District through 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8th. The greater Marion area knows a thing or two about storms that cause unimaginable damage. The derecho of 2020 up-ended many people's lives and homes for weeks. We counted on support from outside of the community to get by and make ends meet. It's time that we do the same for another community in need.

UPDATE: Due to the Marion School District being closed today, donations can be dropped off at the district office at Door 17.
