Late Game Magic Runs Out For Iowa

The Iowa men's basketball program had garnered national headlines recently after back to back buzzer beaters had them in the top half of the Big Ten standings. Late game heroics from Jordan Bohannon against Northwestern, and from Joe Wieskamp versus Rutgers, you had the feeling that this was shaping up to be a magical season for the Hawkeyes. The magic ran out at Carver last night.

Iowa found themselves in a familiar position down double digits in the second half. But like so many times before, they fought back and trailed by just one with seven seconds to go. Bohannon took an off-balance three that never really had a chance and Isiah Moss' putback attempt was off. Iowa lost to Maryland 66.65. It was an ugly game for Iowa with only two players, Bohannon and Moss, scoring in double digits. Tyler Cook had just six points.

As we head towards March, Iowa needs to stop playing from behind and depending on last-second miracles. Yes, this team is better on the defensive end than last year, but it's offensive woes are concerning. Where has Luka Garza gone? Has Wieskamp hit the freshman wall? The Hawkeyes still have the chance of having a special season. Getting that double bye in the Big Ten Tournament would be a great start.
