Jaymz Remembers The Alamo….Bowl
I've covered hundreds of sporting events over the years. It's a part of my job that I love and I've been fortunate to travel to some really cool places. It would be hard to pick a favorite, but the 2006 Alamo Bowl was pretty cool.
That year, Iowa was up against Texas. I was producing a television sports program with my good friend and veteran Iowa broadcaster Bob Brooks. I loved taking trips with Bob. We worked hard, but there was always time to enjoy ourselves and have a little fun.
Our week leading up to the game was full of interviews with coaches and players from both teams. It was easy to produce his show because EVERYONE loved Bob. I didn't need to send formal releases or e-mails. If Bob Brooks wanted an interview, he got one. He made things very easy for me and I loved that. I had VIP access everywhere, only because I was working with a legend.
I was worried San Antonio would be boring. Boy, was I wrong! That week, we hit the River Walk, saw the Alamo, did a story at Sea World, toured a half a dozen bars and found some of the best steak in the country! San Antonio is an awesome city and the weather was perfect.
Bob had his wife with him, so he would retire early. I was out every night checking out the local nightlife. It was great and the bars were off the hook! I also remember the people being very nice in San Antonio. Besides the twangy accents, I felt like I was right back in Iowa!
I write this because I know there are a lot of people from Iowa heading down to the Alamo Bowl this year. Iowa State takes on Washington State Friday night at 8 p.m. It may not be Florida, but trust me, you'll have a good time in San Antonio!
My next blog I will talk about my experience covering the 2009 Outback Bowl. Bob and I took a trip to the beach, but he didn't want to try surfing.
I miss that guy so much, I can't wait to tell you the "Rest of the Story."
To be continued....
