Traffic Law Changes Set to Impact Waterloo Drivers
Last spring, a new piece of legislation received approval from Iowa lawmakers that is changing up traffic rules.
HF 2681, was signed into law this past May and changed how the state deals with the use of Automated Traffic Enforcement.
It reads; "an Act relating to automated traffic systems, including for traffic law enforcement and for capture of registration plate images, providing penalties, and including effective date provisions."
Waterloo Mayor Quentin Hart and the city council wanted to make sure that the city was more aligned with this new standard and ended up enacting a New Resolution to the Automated Traffic Enforcement, according to an official city press release.
In August of this year, city law enforcement changed the speed enforcement rules. Before August 1st, you would only get a ticket/fee if you're driving 12 mph over the speed limit.
NOW, you will get issued a ticket for going just 11 mph over the speed limit.
Here is the new Waterloo speeding fee structure:
- 11 – 20 mph over the limit: $75
- 21 – 25 mph over the limit: $100
- 26 – 30 mph over the limit: $250
- 31+ mph over the limit: $500
Just a reminder, it costs absolutely NOTHING to go the speed limit and to obey traffic laws.
Waterloo Traffic Cameras
This comes off of the heals of the new Iowa DOT precedent which shut down over half of the traffic cameras in the state.
194 of the already existing and operating cameras were shut down on October 1st. This includes thirty Waterloo traffic cameras.
See which of the cameras are still in operation here.
