Did You Miss One of the Coolest Moments in Sports? [VIDEO]
While Iowa isn't the most dedicated state for hockey, I'm curious if you saw one of the coolest moments in sports last night (October 15) between the St Louis Blues and the Minnesota Wild.
I was born in Minnesota and I'm pretty sure one of the agreements you sign right after being born is you're going to learn something about hockey. You come out of the womb and I swear you have to sign some social contract once you've been alive for 2 hours saying you will, at the very least, learn something about the game. You don't have to learn to skate or care about the game but you promise to attend at least one hockey game in your life.
Rare Sports Achievements
Have you ever got to witness a rare sports achievement? One that isn't impossible but it might only happen once or twice a year. Have you ever watched a baseball player hit for the cycle or a pitcher pitch a no-hitter? Have you seen a basketball player record a quadruple-double? Have you got to witness anyone score a hat-trick (3 goals) in a hockey game?
Maybe you've personally made a hole-in-one on the golf course. Have you or a buddy picked up a 7-10 split in bowling? These are rare occurrences in sports and when they happen, it's pretty cool when you get to see them in the moment.
First Time in Wild History
The Minnesota Wild joined the NHL in the year 2000 and something happened last night that has never happened in the 24 years they've been a franchise. This means that in roughly 2,064 hockey games, fans have never seen a Wild goalie accomplish what Filip Gustavsson accomplished yesterday.
He was the first goalie for the Minnesota Wild to ever SCORE A GOAL! I've also never seen a goalie goal in 33 years of watching hockey. I've seen highlights of them before but never while watching a live game. This is one of those sports moments you'll never forget. According to Sports Net, this was only the 18th goal scored by a goalie in NHL history.
Gustavsson was asked about the goalie goal after the game and according to Sports Net, he said he just tried to shoot it as hard as he could.
"They're probably going to try and make me get a whistle and get a face-off in our zone, and they just put it straight in the glove. I tried and put it down as quick as I could. It just laid perfectly there on the ice, and I just tried and shoot as hard as I could."
Gustavsson also gave an assist to the other wild goaltender and future hall of fame, Marc-André Fleury. There was a timeout called on the ice and Marc asked Gustavsson if he was going to shoot it if he had the chance. Gustavsson thought about it for a second and said "Yeah, actually I should shoot it."
It's like the thought never occurred to him until Marc mentioned something. That's how rare goalie goals happen. Some goalies don't even realize they might have a chance to send one down the length of the ice in a perfect situation.
This was one of the coolest sports moments I've got to witness watching a game live. What's the coolest sports moment you've ever seen? Let us know in the comments!
