If you hear a series of loud booms coming from Downtown Davenport or Rock Island this week, don't panic. No, we're not being invaded. No, it's not thunder. And no, your neighbor isn't setting off Fourth of July fireworks a month early.

Rock Island Arsenal Cannon Fire

The Rock Island Arsenal has announced that cannon fire will be heard on Tuesday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 10, as part of a special military ceremony taking place.

According to the U.S. Army Garrison Rock Island Arsenal Public Affairs Office, the cannons will be fired during a rehearsal around 2 p.m. on Tuesday and again during the official ceremony at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

So if your dog suddenly starts barking at the sky or you find yourself wondering what that booming noise was, now you know.

What Is The Cannon Fire For?

The cannon fire is part of the Joint Munitions Command colors casing ceremony. The event marks a significant transition as Joint Munitions Command becomes part of Army Sustainment Command.

The ceremony will also serve as a farewell to Brig. Gen. Daniel Duncan, who is leaving the Rock Island Arsenal for a new assignment with Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.
