Where Is Cedar Rapids Native Zach Johnson’s Green Jacket?
It is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. The Masters. Each spring the world's best golfers come to Augusta, Georgia for a 'tradition unlike any other', at least according to Jim Nantz. The competition is great, but the scenery is gorgeous. Spring at Augusta National golf course is full of color. To win The Masters is to be a part of golf history. Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson pulled off the amazing feat in 2007.
Johnson defeated Tiger Woods that year by 2 strokes to win his first major championship on the PGA Tour. The winner of The Masters is awarded one of the most iconic items in all of sports. A green jacket. Only a select few ever get to slip their arms into a green jacket. Johnson's win at Augusta came 16 years ago. Where is Zach's green jacket? Does it still fit? When does he wear it?
Let's start off with this surprising fact. Zach Johnson doesn't have his green jacket from The Masters. In fact, only one golfer in the world has his green jacket with him. According to Golf.com, only the current Master's champ gets to keep their green jacket with them. As of this past weekend, that would be Jon Rahm who won his first green jacket this past weekend.
Rahm will have to bring his green jacket back next year to Augusta, like all other Masters champions before him, including Zach Johnson. That green jacket then must stay at Augusta National Golf Club and may only be worn when the golfer is at the club, or is out representing Augusta or The Master's Golf Tournament, according to Golf.com.
I always imagined that on any given day, Zach could wake up, walk to his closet and say to himself, "I think it's a green jacket kind of day!" It turns out that no previous Masters champion can say that! What fun is winning the most prestigious sports coat ever if you don't get to keep it?
