Two Iowa Women’s Basketball Starters Will Return Next Year
Eventually, the career of most college athletes will come to an end. Real life and a job will take the place of practices and games. But if you love to play, and have another year of eligibility left, why not stay? Two starters for the Iowa women's basketball team announced yesterday that they are coming back to the team in 2024.
Iowa's captain, Kate Martin, announced that she would be returning for one final season at the University of Iowa, according to the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Martin came to Iowa back in 2018. She had to redshirt her freshman year due to an ACL injury, so next year will be her sixth in Iowa City. The Gazette reports that Marin called her decision to return a "no-brainer." Martin stated that she can "finish her Master's degree and finish debt free." But she wasn't the only Hawkeye announcing their return.
Gabbie Marshall also announced her intentions to return for one final season in Iowa City. The Gazette reports that Marshall said that there are no words to describe playing at Iowa, saying "There are once-in-a-lifetime players like Caitlyn Clark and once-in-a-lifetime leaders like Kate." Both Martin and Marshall will likely be four-year starters for Iowa too.
Not all of this year's Iowa women's players will return next season as the Gazette reports that McKenna Warnock will finish her Iowa career this season and then pursue dental school.
