Sub-Zero, a luxury kitchen appliance manufacturer, has announced a huge expansion of its Cedar Rapids facility.

Sub-Zero to Expand Cedar Rapids Facility

The Corridor Business Journal reports that Sub-Zero announced a $196 million expansion of its Cedar Rapids facility on Tuesday. The project will be an expansion of its existing $140 million, 600,000 square foot plant, which will have an official ribbon-cutting ceremony in late May. The CBJ reports the new project will add over 300 new jobs.

What Will the New Expansion Be Used For?

The CBJ reports that the project is expected to "enhance  production capacity while further integrating advanced manufacturing technologies into the facility.” When completed, the facility at 10015 6th Street SW is expected to employ more than 500 people. No timeline for the project has been released.

Cedar Rapids City Leaders Approve of the Project

Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell stated that the project is a tribute to the city leaders' efforts to bring new industries to Cedar Rapids, according to the CBJ. Other officials note how important the project is for Eastern Iowa, which has lost manufacturing jobs recently, including several hundred at Whirlpool in Amana.

When Will Construction Begin?

The CBJ reports that Cedar Rapids city officials say that the Sub-Zero expansion project should take around 24 months to complete. Construction could begin as soon as this August and wrap up in August of 2028.

Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, the CBJ reports that Sub-Zero manufactures appliances under the Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove brands. Groundbreaking on the original plant happened in 2023. The company chose Cedar Rapids from a field of 900 potential sites.
