Long-time Cedar Rapids police officer and former Cedar Rapids Public Safety Commissioner David Zahn has passed away.

Zahn served with the Cedar Rapids Police Department for 32 years and served as the Cedar Rapids Public Safety Commissioner for six years before returning to the department to serve in a variety of roles. The 59-year-old died at his home due to complications from a recent surgery, according to his obituary.

Zahn was born on September 28th, 1963. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School and Mt. Mercy University. His obituary states that Dave loved helping people. He cared for lost animals, including rescuing a kitten and a family of ducks from the interstate. He changed tires for stranded motorists and helped the homeless. The Cedar Rapids Xavier community will remember him as the officer who kept 42nd street safe from speeders.

I remember working with Dave on a number of different issues involving public safety within the city of Cedar Rapids. He was a guest a number of times on our show, either in person or on the phone. He was always a friendly face whenever I saw him working security at an event here in Cedar Rapids.

Zahn is survived by his wife Suzanne and their son Brogan, his brother Tom (Rebecca) Zahn, and sister Annette Titera. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to any of the places that Dave loved the most: Cedar Rapids Animal Control, Olivet Neighborhood Mission, and the Xavier Foundation.
