[UPDATE: 12/8/22, 4:39 p.m.]: KCCI reports that the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics have taken in and are treating 10-15 individuals injured in relation to Thursday's explosion. Agencies within a 30-50 mile radius responded. More details are below.]

According to KCRG, the City of Marengo is warning people to avoid the area where an explosion happened.

Fire responders were at the scene Thursday as a major fire was reported in the 800 block of East South Street. Officials say the explosion occurred around 11:15 a.m. At least two burn victims with injuries were reported with little else known at this time.

The building is a former grain elevator and soybean crusher facility owned by Heartland Crush, according to property records. A Marengo resident tells us C6-Zero is now operating out of the building. They remanufacture asphalt shingles.

Several individuals were evacuated and are being told to go to the Iowa County Transportation Building for further assistance. They’re also urging people to avoid being outside due to the smoke.

Several medical helicopters have been dispatched to the scene, along with multiple fire departments.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics have been alerted and in a statement said they have received several patients but are unable to comment on their conditions. The Iowa Valley Community School District is reportedly not impacted and will not evacuate schools. The approximately 30 people inside the building at the time of the explosion are all accounted for with 10-15 people at area hospitals being treated for injuries.

Authorities in Iowa County and the city of Marengo are slowly releasing any details. This is a developing story and we will keep you updated as new details become available.
