It will cost you more to get in the gate at the 2020 Iowa State Fair and beyond.

The fair has announced that admission to the fair has been raised to $9 in advance for adults and $5 for kids. That reflects a $1 increase over prices for the 2019 fair.

If you wait and purchase your tickets at the gate during the fair August 13 through 23, they'll cost you $14 or $8, respectively. Those are both $2 increases over last year. Discounts to veterans and senior citizens will be available.

According to We are Iowa, prices on admission at the gate at the Iowa State Fair last increased in 2016. Advance admission is increasing for the first time since 2013.

Fair marketing director Mindy Williamson says the price increase will be used to add additional security at the fair, especially at the gates. She also says the extra money will allow for necessary building renovations and a better experience, in general, at the fair in Des Moines.

August 23, the fair will have its annual discount day. Anyone who brings three canned food items that day will be admitted to the fair for just $7.

Advance tickets for this year's fair are now available, on the Iowa State Fair website.
