The Iowa soldier who would serve as the inspiration for a popular character in the popular book, movie, and TV series M*A*S*H has died.

The Ottumwa Courier reports that Donald Shaffer passed away last week at the age of 92. After graduating from Eldon High School in 1948, Shaffer enlisted in the United States Army. The Courier reports that Shaffer deployed with the 171st Army Evac unit. He spent time in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. He spent most of his time enlisted serving in military intelligence.

After his time in the service, Shaffer returned to the U.S. and taught classes in military intelligence in Maryland, according to CBS2. Shaffer spent 23 years total serving our nation.

The Courier reports that a service with full military honors will be held this Wednesday, April 6th at 2 p.m. at the Eldon Christian Church in Eldon.
