Iowa Rejects Boring New National Road Sign Rule
As someone who used to have a pretty long commute, I have to say these messages would make my Fridays.
According to the Iowa DOT website, this is meant to "help travelers understand the number of fatalities that occur on Iowa’s roads and increase the visibility of traffic safety."
The Federal Government Had Enough
According to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, the federal government is cracking down on roadside signs that have us cracking up.
The Department of Transportation claims that these hilarious signs are actually dangerous due to several factors. They can sometimes take longer to read, cause crashes due to "distracted driving," and straight up confuse people.
At the beginning of 2024, the Federal Highway Commission gave states two years to put a stop to these silly messages.
Initially, it was thought that this was a ban from the FHC, but it turns out that this is just a recommendation.
Iowa Says No...For Now
Either way, officials are against making these changes to their Iowa DOT program. They have outright rejected it!
In a report from KCRG, an official from the Iowa DOT, Willy Sorenson, claimed that these messages are not a danger to people out on the roads.
”We’ve got ten years of history here and actually to the best of my knowledge I’ve never been told we’ve even caused a fender bender,” Sorenson said.
So, for the time being Iowans will continue to see these interesting messages when they hit the road every Friday.
