The University of Iowa Sports Information Department has announced men's basketball player Jordan Bohannon was seriously injured in a physical assault early Sunday morning outside an Iowa City nightclub.

According to the release, Bohannon received medical attention to treat a serious head injury. KCRG reported during their 6 p.m. newscast that a source close to the Bohannon family said Jordan had five staples put in his head due to the injuries.

Iowa men's coach Fran McCaffery said,

Thankfully Jordan is recovering well after being attacked by an individual he did not see coming at him. We were made aware of the incident immediately. We are grateful that friends who were with Jordan at the time kept the incident from escalating. His health is our number one concern.

Mitch Fick, from our news partner CBS 2 Iowa News Now, says that the Iowa City Police Department has confirmed to him that they are investigating the incident. Police say it happened near closing time Sunday morning, in front of D.C.'s sports bar. D.C.'s is located on South Dubuque Street in downtown Iowa City.

Bohannon recently announced that he'll return to Iowa for a sixth season after being eligible for the 2021-22 due to an exemption put into place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Marion native and Linn-Mar grad, Bohannon holds four all-time records at Iowa.
