A former Iowa teacher who was accused of having inappropriate contact with a 13-year-old student has been found dead, according to authorities. Last week (Wednesday, July 7), police arrested 42-year-old Adam Edgington of Nevada after he turned himself into officials. He was charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee.

Edgington was released from custody later the same day. One day later, Edgington was found dead in his car, which was parked in a field, according to KCRG. According to a We Are Iowa report, Edgington had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

A timeline of events

Adam Edgington was a Marshalltown middle school teacher who, according to the School District's website, was a language arts teacher at Miller Middle School. At the time he was taken into custody, Edgington was accused of kissing, hugging, holding hands with, and fondling the student at points during the last school year, according to the KCRG report. The student was in one of the classes Edgington taught.

After his release from custody on Wednesday, Edgington was scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday, July 12. As per Iowa law, had Edgington been convicted of the charged with exploitation by a school employee, he would have faced a prison sentence and could have been placed on the state's sex offender registry for 10 years.

Issues with the Marshalltown School District

This is the second recent sexual exploitation case an instructor in the Marshalltown school district faced in recent weeks. 26-year-old instructor Mark Esquivel who worked at the Marshalltown High School was taken into custody on June 30.
