Here's an odd sentence... the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) is having a furniture sale. No, they're not selling car seats or used seatbelts, they're selling actual furniture.

What's interesting to me is, while state government agencies will often have auctions for surplus or unclaimed items, I've never seen, or heard of a government agency selling furniture.

The sale, which will happen on January 5, will showcase all sorts of items, priced at only $20 each, and that does include tax.

In a press release sent to this station (also online here), the Iowa DOT says of the sale,

Are you looking for affordable office furniture? The Iowa Department of Transportation will sell surplus office furniture for $20 each piece (tax included) at our main complex in Ames.

Before I fill you in on exactly when and exactly where to go for the sale, I mentioned that there are auctions for items the government has possession of, for whatever reason. If you have some extra Christmas money, check out the items currently available here. Especially if you're looking for a vehicle.

Some of the cars for sale would make a great first vehicle for a new driver, or an extra mode of transportation for a small business or family.

Anyway, back to the Iowa DOTs furniture sale... still weird to say that. Here's the info:

  • WHEN: January 5 – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • WHERE: 800 Lincoln Way in Ames at the Northwest wing
  • SALE INCLUDES: File cabinets, tables, shelving units, and other office items
  • PAYMENT: Cash, check, or money order only (no credit/debit cards)
  • NEED MORE INFO?: Contact David Bollenbaugh at 515-239-1576 or email dot.auction@iowadot.us
