I Want My MTV Back
I graduated in 1994, so that means I grew up with MTV. For those of you who don't know, MTV stood for Music Television. It was a 24 hour music channel.
My friends and I would watch MTV everyday. It was fantastic, music videos all day and night. I grew up in a small town in Minnesota, we barely had running water. We didn't have any decent radio stations, but we had MTV. This cable channel brought New York City and the Sunset Strip directly to our living rooms, 365 days a year. MTV was the reason I picked up the guitar and grew a super cool mullet. Such great memories.
MTV had the newest music, the coolest VJ's, contests, concert ticket giveaways and interviews with the biggest rock bands. It was our escape from the real world. We would even set the VCR on Saturday nights to record Headbangers Ball, so we could watch it on Sunday morning. (I don't miss the VCR).
Unfortunately, MTV has toned down its music video programming significantly in recent years. According to Wikipedia, it now consists mainly of original reality, comedy and drama programming. Ratings are falling and people can now watch videos on their computer or smart phone. Most people stopped watching MTV years ago.
It was fun while it lasted, thanks for the memories MTV. If you ever get tired of your current programming, try playing a music video. We all may watch again.
