How The Manning QB Family Helped the Career of Spencer Petras
Iowa football fans have been tough on quarterback Spencer Petras. That comes with the job of being a starting quarterback on a ranked Big Ten football squad. Hawkeye fans also know that if they want another successful season this fall, much of the weight will once again fall on the shoulders of Spencer Petras. Fortunately for Petras, he got a little help this summer from three Hall of Fame quarterbacks with the same last name.
Petras was invited to be a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy last month in Louisiana. He joined around 40 other college quarterbacks at the camp. As you can probably deduce for yourself, the camp is put on by legendary quarterbacks Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. All three are in the NFL Hall of Fame. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Petras and the other counselors got some on-field coaching from the Mannings and also got to take part in a question and answer session.
The Gazette reports that Petras says he learned a lot, taking as many notes as possible. His main takeaway from being around Peyton Manning was how intense he still is, even though his playing days are over. Petras also trended on Twitter while at the Manning camp. A video showing the Iowa quarterback firing a dart downfield some 75 yards opened a lot of eyes. But will it translate on the field this fall?
The Gazette reports that Petras took a lot away from the camp experience, more mental than physical. A strong and confident Spencer Petras could add up to some big wins in Iowa City. Which Manning do we send the thank you note to?
